Book review: The Hobbit

Hello everyone! It’s my second post and I really hope you’ll enjoy it. I also hope you’re having a great day (it’s the 3rd day of February already *Hooray!*).

It’s took so long to write this because: (I know that it may look like they’re the same thing but believe me, they are NOT!) a) I had a lot of muggle stuff to take care of (no offence here) b) I have a lot of EXAMS *eww*, unfortunately I am partially free from those little devilish things at the moment (Hallelujah!!)

Anyways back to our business, I finally read the famous and beloved book by J.R.R. Tolkien: “The Hobbit”, and I absolutely like LOVE IT!!!! I don’t know nor understand how stupid (but brilliant) I was to not read it earlier, and I can’t believe that I actually was VERY hesitating over if I should really read it, but from the moment I began reading it, all my worries vanished like the vanished glass from that zoo in Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone. I became so fond of the book that I did a quick (who am I kidding?? I spend an hour or so searching about the author and his background and other ‘important’ things about him 🙂 ) research about the story as well as the author and guess what?? I found that he was a philologist and that he made some languages up as well, I was So intrigued that I learned how to write using some of them; the same one used in the Hobbit(I like learning languages too so *shrugging*…)

The story begins with Bilbo Baggins, the hero who is (obviously) a hobbit.He was living a quiet life in his comfortable Hobbit-hole, but his quiet life won’t stay that way forever. It started with Gandalf’s sudden visit, and after a rather long discussion with a lot of ‘Good morning’s, he invited him for a cup of tea.

Gandalf, when he was leaving, scratches a mark on Bilbo’s door that said: “Burglar wants a good job, plenty of excitement and reasonable reward”. Later, thirteen dwarves showed up and talked excitedly about their plan. It was so simple: kill Smaul, the dragon who seized the lonely moutain from the dwarves’ ancestors (SO simple for the cautious hobbit), then by using a secret door into the mountain, recover it along with the treasures within its halls. During all that time, the unfortunate hobbit was providing the compulsory hostility.

The next day, Bilbo overslept and nearly missed the start of their long journey. They risked getting killed by three trolls but Gandalf saved them and the trolls turned into stone under the sun rays. They found swords in the troll’s cave , they found out later (from Elrond; a half-elven) that they were actually old swords, they were made in Gondolin for the Goblin-war; Thorin had Orcrist ,Gandalf had Glamdring and Bilbo had sting.

Later on, they eventually arrived to their destination; but after a LOT of obstacles that are somewhat concluded below.

• The dwarves and Bilbo were ambushed by those FREAKING giant goblins (they escaped of course).
• Bilbo found the RING and beat Gollum, the precious, in their Riddle-game, then Bilbo run actually followed Gollum to the exit by using the magical ring (he made him Invisible); it was actually the precious’ birthday present.
• They were rescued (lucky them!) by eagles from Wargs, then they met Beorn; he can tranform into a BEAR!. But before they set off again, Gandalf left on an errand.
• They got lost after leaving the right path to beg for food from the wood-elves, then captured by Giant spiders and the dwarves, but Bilbo helped his companions to escape in each time.
• They found the secret door (in a magical way), Bilbo was send to encounter Smaug who set out (after their “meeting”) to destroy Laketown for helping the company.
• Bard the bowman killed Smaug, so the dwarves were able to take possession of the treasure.
• Thorin and the dwarves didn’t want to share the riches with
  The citizens of Laketown or the elves, instead they summoned Kin to strenghen their position.
• The battle of five armies happened!!

If you’ve already read it, then…

You probably know by now that I’m madly IN LOVE with this book, it’s true because I LOVE IT!!!! I liked the characters (didn’t like Thorin’s attitude near the end though), the plot, the writing style, basically everything; I’m so looking forward reading the other books of J.R.R. Tolkien: the lords of the rings (the sequel of the Hobbit) and the silmarillion…

So, this is my (long?) review for The Hobbit, I really hope you’ve liked it.
