Ever Alice by H. J. Ramsay
Genres: Fantasy, retelling
Alice’s stories of Wonderland did more than raise a few eyebrows—it landed her in an asylum. Now at 15 years of age, she’s willing to do anything to leave, which includes agreeing to an experimental procedure. When Alice decides at the last minute not to go through with it, she escapes with the White Rabbit to Wonderland and trades one mad house for another: the court of the Queen of Hearts. Only this time, she is under orders to take out the Queen. When love, scandal, and intrigue begin to muddle her mission, Alice finds herself on the wrong side of the chopping block.

Ever Alice is a retelling of the famous tale Alice in Wonderland. It revolves around Alice, now fifteen years old, and how her life since her last time in Wonderland. Her insistence that Wonderland is real along with all its creatures was worrying enough that her parents put her in an asylum. Alice is willing to do anything to get out of it. So when an opportunity arises in the form of an experimental procedure, she accepts.
Upon arriving at where the procedure would happen, she instantly start feeling that something’s off. The White Rabbit comes just at the right time, when they’re about to begin. When she crosses over to Wonderland, she discovers that it has changes so much since the last time she was there.
I’ve yet to read Alice’s original story, but I’ve watched the movie adaptations and though I don’t remember the details since I’ve watched it ages ago, I knew enough to understand what’s going on. I think this version is a bit more mature than the original one -logical given that she’s now fifteen- even though it still has that Wonderlandish taste which I really like.
I can’t help feeling like the plot is missing something, it’s not that I didn’t like it but I just think there should be more…. Let’s not talk about that ending, that was WILD! for those who have read it, is it what I think is it?!?
PS. I’m having foggy brain days /weeks😶 so apologies if it’s a mess.
