Layla by Colleen Hoover
Genres: Paranormal, fiction

When Leeds meets Layla, he’s convinced he’ll spend the rest of his life with her—until an unexpected attack leaves Layla fighting for her life. After weeks in the hospital, Layla recovers physically, but the emotional and mental scarring has altered the woman Leeds fell in love with. In order to put their relationship back on track, Leeds whisks Layla away to the bed-and-breakfast where they first met. Once they arrive, Layla’s behavior takes a bizarre turn. And that’s just one of many inexplicable occurrences.
Feeling distant from Layla, Leeds soon finds solace in Willow—another guest of the B&B with whom he forms a connection through their shared concerns. As his curiosity for Willow grows, his decision to help her find answers puts him in direct conflict with Layla’s well-being. Leeds soon realizes he has to make a choice because he can’t help both of them. But if he makes the wrong choice, it could be detrimental for all of them.
This is the third book I’ve read by Colleen Hoover and I’m looking forward to reading her other books despite being quite skeptical about her books. which book(s) do you recommend?! (I’ve already read Verity and It Ends With Us)
Layla is told in Leeds’ POV which was quite a change of scenery for me. However, I really don’t like him; he’s a liar, a cheater, and what was more chocking is how he has THE AUDACITY to justify his wrong deeds.
I tried to write a spoiler-free review but I just couldn’t stop myself from venting, so if you haven’t read the book yet, I’d advise you to proceed with caution–I have marked where spoilers start.
Leeds started dating Layla about a year ago at her sister’s wedding where he was the bass player. They noticed each other right away and had this instant connection. Months pass by and they’re now living with each other when one day, an unstable ex of Leeds comes and ruins their little happy bubble. Layla is deeply affected by it and spend a lot of time trying to recover. Leeds gets the brilliant idea of going back where they first met, and guess what?! It was for sale!!
So they went and rented the place. And that’s when weird things started happening. Apparently, there was a ghost in the house and they (Leeds and the ghost) somehow have a connection beyond *realms* and whatnot.
If you don’t want to be spoiled, stop here!!
The things that kept bugging me was how Leeds started “forming” a relationship with the ghost (Willow). Not only that, but he was also using Layla‘s body as way for Willow (the ghost) to be able to communicate with him, and he grew to like it because, apparently, he’s starting to fall in love with her WHILE STILL BEING WITH LAYLA! And it just keeps getting worse and worse and he keeps justifying it with things like “Oh but Willow is just a ghost” or “I get to feel this way when I’m with Willow that I don’t feel with Layla anymore but I won’t let layla go because who am I going to use to talk to Willow?!”
I really didn’t like how negatively he talked about Sable (his ex) and her illnesses; she was diagnosed with eating disorders along with anxiety and depression. It was like: Since she’s “sick/unstable” then it is justified for me to kill her.
Overall, I really didn’t like it much.
